<![CDATA[ Latest from GamesRadar+ in Entertainment ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com/feeds/tag/entertainment/ 2025-03-11T23:14:31Z en <![CDATA[ New Devil May Cry trailer reveals surprise twist for Netflix show and gives Dante a nu metal soundtrack ]]> The spirit of the early 2000s is alive and well in the new Devil May Cry trailer for Netflix’s upcoming show. Protagonist Dante gets an appropriately brash intro, while nu metal superstars Papa Roach provide the soundtrack.

The footage opens with the introduction of Dante as a "top-level threat," before the demon-hunting hero quips he "works better with music" and sticks something on the jukebox. Then a montage of cataclysmic events kicks off, led by White Rabbit, a relatively obscure villain from the franchise serving as one of main baddies here.

We get multiple clips of both White Rabbit and Dante carving and blasting through enemies, hinting at an eventual clash that should be a mighty fireworks display. Ebony and Ivory, Dante’s signature guns, get plenty of screentime, his blade Rebellion only getting a look in towards the end.

The closing shot brings in a familiar face for anyone who knows the video games: Vergil, Dante’s estranged brother and a recurring thorn in his side. This is a surprising inclusion, since Vergil would’ve made such an easy surprise twist, but perhaps what’s in store will be even more gob-smacking.

This is another production from Adi Shankar, the creative mastermind behind Castlevania, Captain Laserhawk and more for Netflix. Each hails from a different games studio, Devil May Cry coming from Capcom while Castlevania is owned by Konami and Captain Laserhawk is an amalgamation of Ubisoft properties. Shankar has become a dab hand at managing these adaptations and delivering results.

An anime show based on Devil May Cry was produced back in 2007, from Madhouse, the company behind Death Note, Cardcaptors and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. It was short-lived, at just one season, so here's hoping this project lasts longer.

Devil May Cry arrives on Netflix April 3, 2025. Have a look at our list of the best horror movies on Netflix for more of what goes bump in the night.

<![CDATA[ Netflix is making a brand new adaptation of Cujo, the infamous Stephen King book about a killer dog ]]> Netflix is making a new adaptation of Stephen King's Cujo - and honestly, I'm surprised it took this long.

According to Deadline, Netflix has brokered the deal - but no directors and writers have been attached yet. The 1981 novel (which King allegedly does not remember writing) sees a St. Bernard basically become a murderer after being bitten by a bat and contracting rabies. It's an especially sad tale given that it involves an abusive husband, a kid who has seizures, and well, the whole dog thing.

The book was first adapted into a feature-length film in 1983, starring Dee Wallace as a mother trapped inside a car with her child while a rabid dog tries to get inside. Lewis Teague, who also directed the Stephen King adaptation The Cat's Eye, helmed the film with a screenplay from Don Carlos Dunaway (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and Barbara Turner (Pollock). The film was a modest box office success, but was ultimately panned by critics. Like many lower-rated Stephen King adaptations, Cujo went on to become a cult classic.

King is pretty busy right now what with The Monkey, based on his creepy award-winning short story, hitting theaters in February, and The Life of Chuck, based on a story from a more recent collection, due out later this year. Mike Flanagan is also set to turn The Dark Tower series into a five-season show for Prime Video.

<![CDATA[ Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has a new update on The Winds of Winter: "I wish it would come faster" ]]> George R.R. Martin has a new update on The Winds of Winter, but it doesn't sound like the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series is coming anytime soon.

"I have to finish the books. That's the one thing I'm completely in control of," Martin told Collider. "There's no budget limitations. There's no other executives on the studio side that I have to please, or other writers with different views. The books are what I'm going to make them. And, I think the one I'm writing is coming pretty well, but I wish it would come faster."

The last installment in the series, A Dance With Dragons, was published back in 2011, and The Winds of Winter was expected to follow in 2016. Eight years later, there's still no sign of it. The books served as the source material for Game of Thrones, which came to an end in 2019.

Martin has had a conflicted relationship with recent adaptations of his work, as alluded to in his comment to Collider. Last year, he blasted planned "toxic changes" in House of the Dragon season 3, the next installment in the adaptation of his book Fire & Blood, in a now-deleted blog post.

The next small-screen take on his work is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new series based on Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas. Set a century before Game of Thrones, the show will follow unlikely duo Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg. "It’s as faithful as an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject)," the author recently said on his blog.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to arrive on HBO and Max in late 2025. In the meantime, check out our guide to other most exciting new TV shows to add to your watchlist this year.

<![CDATA[ Marvel fans are revealing who they'd like to see added to the Thunderbolts lineup, from Moon Knight to a major Hulk villain ]]> Thunderbolts* isn't even out in cinemas yet, but that hasn't stopped Marvel fans from discussing which comic book characters they'd love to see join the anti-Avengers team.

Taking to Reddit, anthonystrader18 asked users who they'd add to the lineup if they had a choice, and it turns out that many people had the same suggestions. The most common picks were Emil Blonsky AKA Abomination (Tim Roth), Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), and Jessica Jones' character Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor), who isn't canonically a part of the MCU currently – with a few others wanting Marc Spector AKA Moon Knight (Oscar Isaac) in the mix.

"Zemo for the sake of having more Zemo, but I think MCU Zemo would be more focused on killing the whole team," wrote one fan. "Trish would be cool. Frank would be overkill. Bullseye is a menace, you can't control him."

"Abomination makes the most MCU sense. Moon Knight would be a fun addition though," said another, as a third agreed: "Abomination. I think he'd fit the 'lost person looking for a purpose' role pretty nicely."

"Trish is a superhuman, has no issue killing people and is also (in the nicest way possible) kinda dumb. So she's perfect for the team," replied a fourth.

"Trish and Blonsky are the ones that I think would make the most sense narratively, they could both be feasibly redeemed to the point where antihero or semi-hero, whatever you want to call that grey area, would be comfortable for their character," another chimed in. "While mixing in Frank or Dex would give potential for awesome sequences, it would make no sense - Frank especially. I cannot imagine a world where Frank is taking orders from anyone in government, given his history and character development in his show and in Daredevil."

Deadpool characters Vanessa Carlysle, though they name-dropped her Marvel Comics persona Hellcat specifically, and Peter were mentioned, too, as was unexpected She-Hulk standout Madisynn.

<![CDATA[ First reactions to new clown horror movie say the slasher is giving Terrifier a run for its money ]]> The first reactions are in for new horror movie Clown in a Cornfield after its premiere at SXSW – and viewers are full of praise for the slasher comedy with a twist.

Directed by Tucker & Dale vs. Evil helmer Eli Craig, the movie is based on the novel of the same name by Adam Cesare and made by the same production company behind the Smile franchise. The film follows teenager Quinn (Katie Douglas), who moves to a small town in Missouri after the death of her mother. Their fresh start is disrupted, however, when the town's mascot Frendo the Clown begins to wreak bloody havoc on its residents.

"#ClownInACornfield was fucking spectacular!" tweeted one viewer. "Paving the way for a new generation of slashers! A new era and I’m here for it. A gruesome, wild and chaotic bloodbath! Amazing cast and a premise that will shock people! A huge win for horror fans! Folks are gonna lose their minds!"

"CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD is a movie every horror head out there needs to watch, from the off the wall kills to the laugh out loud self-aware comedy," wrote another. "Katie Douglas is a subtle scream queen but when her moments take center stage, she rocks. Also watch out Terrifier, Frendo is here."

"CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD starts off as a classic slasher, playing into the genre’s time-tested tropes, and does a pretty great job of it. But then, it takes a clever turn into something quite unexpected I haven’t quite seen before, all while still honoring the genre’s traditions," someone else posted.

"CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD is one of the best slashers of the decade, full stop," another viewer wrote. Masterfully emulates the key genre gears but also does something I’ve never seen before (holy shit). Ferocious kills, sharp humor, and a powerful message at its core. This one is special."

"#ClownInACornfield is a slasher comedy w/ some really nice surprises in store," said someone else. "It’s a very conventional killer clown movie…UNTIL IT’S NOT! If you enjoyed Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, this is the same director mixing more thrills & scares into his proven comedic chops."

Clown in a Cornfield hits the big screen on May 9. In the meantime, check out our guide to the other biggest upcoming horror movies on the way in 2025.

<![CDATA[ New horror movie starring White Lotus and Yellowstone actors gets a great Rotten Tomatoes score as early reactions call it the "perfect date night movie" ]]> A new twisty thriller has been impressing critics after debuting at the SXSW festival. Drop, from horror director Christopher Landon, is currently at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 18 reviews.

The movie stars The White Lotus actor Meghann Fahy as Violet, a single mother who goes on a date with Yellowstone actor Brandon Sklenar's Henry. While she's on it, Violet is terrorised with a series of anonymous drops on her phone, threatening her sister and her son. They'll only survive, they tell her, if she follows a series of instructions, including killing her date.

The Hollywood Reporter's Lovia Gyarkye writes: "Landon’s command of suspense, coupled with a compelling romantic thread and delightful performances from Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar, make Drop a solid popcorn movie"

Meanwhile, The Guardian's Adrian Horton gives it four out of five stars, writing: "I have a special place in my heart for a movie that knows what it is, doesn’t mislead and delivers accordingly in a tight 90 minutes. Drop, as indicated by title and trailer, is a one-room thriller for the digital natives."

Collider critic Nate Richard awards it eight out of ten, concluding: "While there are plenty of thrillers that excel at keeping things ambiguous, Drop is not that kind of movie. It's the perfect date-night movie, one that will have your audience gasping, laughing, and interacting with the screen."

Not everyone is convinced though, with The Wrap's Chase Hutchinson writing: "It may be just slick enough in small slivers to win some over, but audiences should raise their standards for what they get out of this date. If you were out for dinner with this movie, you’d likely find yourself wondering when the check would finally arrive so you could go out and have a more fun time elsewhere."

Drop hits theaters on April 11. For more, check out all the upcoming horror movies coming in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ After 11 years, Family Guy suddenly brings back a deep-cut character for season 23 ]]> Just as The Simpsons and South Park continue to march forth, so too does Family Guy. The animated stalwart has reached season 23, now so old it has a wealth of in-jokes and references to draw from. One particularly deep cut happened in episode 4 of the current season, where a character unseen for 11 years finally came back.

The episode, 'Lois C.K.,' centers on Lois becoming a comedian. During one of her sets, a crowd-member stands out among the positive reception, clapping and laughing along. He's a recurring background gag, simply known as the Fat Laughing Clapping Guy, who’s made extremely sporadic appearances over the direction of the TV series.

Fat Laughing Clapping Guy in Family Guy season 23

His first recorded occurrence was back in season 5, where he showed up in episode 6. He did so again the same season, in episodes 10 and 23. He had similar regularity in seasons 6 and 7, making surprise appearances to, well, laugh and clap.

Then he gradually disappeared, being drawn into scenes in season 8 and 13 without his usual boisterous nature. He's been absent ever since, relegated to the vault of Family Guy obscurity, the fodder of aficionados and quiz questions on the minutiae of television in the 2000s and 2010s.

Until now, that is. The Fat Laughing Clapping Guy is back where he belongs, jovially providing applause with his signature guffaw to the occasional scene involving the Griffins in some capacity or another. This season was part of Family Guy's 25th anniversary, perhaps adding to why such a deep-cut got aired out.

Maybe Seth MacFarlane missed him, or maybe someone in the writers room wanted someone in the crowd to add a little heft to the scene, creating the perfect time for this man’s resurgence. Whichever it is, we have one request: Don't make it another 11 years. Peruse our list of new TV shows for more obscure legends in the making.

<![CDATA[ Despite those retirement reports, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy is "very involved" in the Rey Star Wars movie, according to Daisy Ridley ]]> Daisy Ridley has shared another update on her Rey Star Wars movie, and, despite all those retirement reports, it sounds like Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy is still very hands-on.

"I believe that she's very involved," Ridley told The Direct. "I think there was reporting that was not true. So yeah, very [involved]."

Kennedy herself has debunked rumors of her imminent retirement. "The truth is, and I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring. I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies. That is the first thing that’s important to say. I am not retiring," she said.

"What's happening at Lucasfilm is I have been talking for quite some time with both Bob and Alan about what eventual succession might look like," she continued. "We have an amazing bench of people here, and we have every intention of making an announcement months or a year down the road," she explained. "We are in lockstep as to what that's going to be, and I am continuing. I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that."

As for the Rey movie, it recently gained a new writer following Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight's departure – George Nolfi will now pen the script, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on board to direct. There's no release date just yet.

Next up for Star Wars is Andor season 2, which arrives this April 23. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming Star Wars movies and shows for everything else the galaxy far, far away has in store.

<![CDATA[ Scarlett Johansson doubles down on never coming back as Black Widow: “Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay?" ]]> Scarlett Johansson is really done with the MCU, even if some fans refuse to believe it. In a recent interview, the actor confirmed (again) that her Black Widow is not coming back. Ever.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay?," she told InStyle, leaving no room for argument.

"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson added, talking about Marvel fans. "They're like, 'But she could come back!' Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We're going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

Indeed, Natasha Romanoff died as a hero in Avengers: Endgame when she sacrificed herself to obtain the Soul Stone, which was essential to undo the consequences of Thanos' snap.

Zoe Saldaña's Gamora was killed in that same place in Vormir during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, but the character was brought back not long after from an alternate timeline. It doesn't seem like anything like that will ever happen with Natasha, as Scarlett Johansson is clearly not open to the idea of reprising her character.

"I’m done. Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience," she told MCU co-star Gwyneth Paltrow on her episode of the Goop Podcast in 2023.

With her MCU era definitely closed, the Oscar-nominated actress is joining another legendary franchise this summer. Johansson stars alongside Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali in Jurassic World: Rebirth, a new instalment in the Jurassic Park saga set five years after Jurassic World Dominion.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2025 and beyond, or, check out our complete list of movie release dates.

<![CDATA[ Lady Gaga jokingly celebrates Joker 2 reception and Razzie nominations: "Joke's on them. I love winning things" ]]> Lady Gaga jokingly addressed the reception to Joker: Folie à Deux during her SNL opening monologue, including the sequel's multiple Razzie nominations.

"Anyways, I’m an actor now. And I’ve been very diligent about selecting films that can showcase my craft as a serious actor, films such as Joker 2," she said during her appearance on the comedy sketch show. "Apparently people thought it was awesome."

Gaga played Lee Quinzel in the movie, a new take on Harley Quinn. "Joaquin and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year," she continued. "We won for worst screen duo. But joke’s on them. I love winning things! And my Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT. It’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful."

Although 2019's Joker was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and became the first R-rated movie to make $1 billion at the box office, the sequel was less well-received. As well as the Worst Screen Combo win for Gaga and Arthur Fleck actor Joaquin Phoenix at this year's Razzies, Gaga was also nominated for Worst Actress and Joker 2 was up for Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture.

Next up for Gaga, though, is a turn to the small screen, with a mysterious role in Wednesday season 2. "She's the best, definitely one of the most talented individuals I've ever worked with," the show's star Jenna Ortega said of working with her. "It was just a really, really special environment to be there with her and Tim [Burton], two people that I respect and have been inspired by so much."

Wednesday season 2 is arriving on Netflix sometime in 2025. In the meantime, fill out your watchlist with our picks of the other best Netflix shows or our guide to the rest of this year's biggest new TV shows.

<![CDATA[ Game of Thrones creator makes sudden cameo in TV show for apparent joke about The Winds of Winter ]]> George R. R. Martin made a surprise cameo in the TV show Dark Winds, with an apparent dig at his long-delayed new novel, The Winds of Winter. The scene is in the season 3 premiere, and he’s not the only famous face involved.

We got the first episode of Dark Winds season 3 this week, featuring a pair of true ne'er-do-wells in holding. Joe Leaphorn stops by to check on them, revealing a chess game, with Martin on end, thinking of his next mode of attack, and opposite him? Hollywood icon Robert Redford, who delivers a choice dig.

"George, the whole world's waiting, make a move," Redford’s character exclaims. Martin’s prisoner remains tentative, until Joe gives him a winning tactic.

If only finishing the next installment of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration behind Game of Thrones, was so simple. Martin and Redford are both executive producers on Dark Winds, itself an adaptation of another book series by Tony Hillerman about various cases tackled by Joe and his fellow detective Jim Chee, so it's not totally random to see them.

Any public appearance by Martin garners the same response of people wondering when we’ll get to read the sixth part of A Song of Ice and Fire. It's been 14 years since the last book, A Dance With Dragons, and we've had scattered updates since, including from Martin, who says progress is being made.

To be fair, he's had his hands full since 2011, helping with Game of Thrones itself, collaborating with FromSoftware on the game Elden Ring, and all manner of other exploits, including just recently opening his own cocktail bar. Several more of his works have been adapted, with In a Lost Lands starring Milla Jovovich about to arrive in theatres.

Of course, House of the Dragon season 3 will continue the history of Westeros, looking at the Targaryens years before the events of Game of Thrones. Sometimes it really seems like we’re going to get everything except The Winds of Winter. Alas, have a look through our new TV shows and upcoming movies guides for releases you can definitely count on.

<![CDATA[ Resident Evil director offers update on his horror movie adaptation of Until Dawn-sounding video game from over 20 years ago: "It's going to be very, very scary" ]]> The House of the Dead movie just got an exciting update from its director Paul W.S. Anderson, with the filmmaker promising to "push the envelope" when it comes to his big-screen take on the horror video game.

"It's going to be immersive and very, very scary," he told Variety, while promoting In the Lost Lands. "It'll all play out in real time, so it reflects the experience of playing the video game. The only time it stops is when you beat the game or you die. That's going to be the only way out."

"I'm really going to push the envelope on this one. It's going to be something different for me," Anderson, who's no stranger to adaptations, having helmed Mortal Kombat and six Resident Evil flicks, continued. He then went on to describe the movie as a "full-on terror ride".

While the first The House of the Dead game was released in 1996, Anderson's film is set to start filming in mid-to-late 2025. It'll adapt the events of the third chapter, which became available to players in 2002. Developed by Wow Entertainment and SEGA, the campaign follows Thomas Rogan and his team of commandos as they break into a research facility in search of answers to Earth's collapse.

Anderson's The House of the Dead won't be the first time the franchise has been turned into a feature, with Uwe Boll having adapted the material back in 2003. The prequel received very poor reviews and only made $13.8 million at the box-office, resulting in Michael Hurst's follow-up in 2004 going direct-to-DVD.

For now, Anderson is gearing up to release fantasy action flick In the Lost Lands on March 14, which sees Milla Jovovich's witch Gray Alys hire hunter Boyce (Dave Bautista) to help her track down a powerful artifact. It is based on the short story of the same name by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin.

<![CDATA[ Daredevil: Born Again had Disney Plus' biggest premiere of 2025, but its viewership is lower than Agatha All Along and The Acolyte ]]> Daredevil: Born Again might have been one of everyone's most anticipated new TV shows, but its premiere wasn't quite the smash hit you might've been expecting.

As reported by TheWrap, the Marvel Phase 5 show secured Disney Plus's biggest premiere of 2025, but its 7.5 million global views (across its first five days streaming) have fallen short of the premieres of both Agatha All Along (9.3 million views, though across an extra two days) and The Acolyte (11.1 million views). It's also lower than Loki season 2, which drew 10.9 million views across its first three days back in 2023.

Still, as Disney Plus's top premiere of the year so far, that means Daredevil: Born Again outperformed the likes of Goosebumps: The Vanishing, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Pixar's Win or Lose.

Daredevil has brought back Charlie Cox's Man Without Fear, along with Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin, Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page, and Jon Bernthal's Punisher.

A Punisher special is also on the way, which Bernthal has teased will be dark. "It's going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It's not going to be easy. I don't know if that's the Netflix tone then that's what it's going to be,” he said recently, adding: "It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that."

Daredevil: Born Again continues weekly on Disney Plus, and you can keep up to date with our Daredevil: Born Again release schedule. For our spoiler-free verdict on the entire season, check out our Daredevil: Born Again season 1 review.

<![CDATA[ The Boys star Jack Quaid's commitment to the bit is unmatched as his latest marketing stunt for upcoming action movie Novocaine goes viral ]]> Jack Quaid just can't seem to catch a break as his latest marketing stunt for the upcoming action movie Novocaine leaves him broken and bloody at a basketball game.

The star was seen at the Kings vs Clippers NBA game on March 9 with Novocaine co star Amber Midthunder, but every time The Boys actor appeared on the jumbotron, he seemed to be getting more and more beaten up as the game went on, from having his arm in a sling to bruises materialising on his face. Fans caught the actor’s injuries getting more intense on camera, which has since been turned into a montage and posted on Twitter by Culture Crave.

Of course, this is all a marketing stunt for the star’s next project, Novocaine, which sees Quaid play a man called Nathan Caine who is unable to feel any pain. So when his girlfriend (Midthunder) gets kidnapped, Caine has no problem going after her and getting beaten by her captors in the process. If the star’s recent appearance at the NBA match is anything to go by, it looks like Caine is going to get quite the battering in the new movie.

This isn't the first time movie marketing has infiltrated real life sports games, as horror franchise Smile has previously had actors show up at baseball games and freak out attendees. Quaid on the other hand, is known for getting right into fake gore and prosthetics, as just last month we saw him doused in blood on set of The Boys season 5.

Novocaine is directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. Alongside Quaid and Midthunder, the movie also stars Spider-Man’s Jacob Batalon and Smile 2’s Ray Nicholson.

<![CDATA[ A TV remake of a '90s cult classic movie has been canceled by Prime Video after only one season ]]> Amazon Prime Video's Cruel Intentions joins the list of canceled TV shows in 2025, as the series has been scrapped after just one season, Variety reports.

The show premiered in November 2024 to mixed reviews, with a score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. The original 1999 movie of the same name also received a mixed critical reception upon release, but went on to become a cult classic. No such similar luck for the TV show, though, it seems.

Based on the 1999 movie of the same name (which in turn is based on Dangerous Liaisons, an 18th-century French novel), the series follows two step-siblings, Caroline and Lucien, who are willing to go to any lengths to maintain their power and reputation at their elite Washington DC college after a hazing incident gone wrong – including seducing the daughter of the US vice president.

Catherine Sarah Hook, who's currently starring in The White Lotus season 3, played Caroline, based on Sarah Michelle Gellar's character in the original movie. Boy Swallows World's Zac Burgess played Lucien, based on Ryan Phillippe's character, and Gossip Girl's Savannah Lee Smith was Annie, the VP's daughter, based on Reese Witherspoon's character.

The show had a long journey to the screen: it went into development in 2021 before being ordered to series in April 2023, but other small-screen adaptations had also been attempted in 1999 and 2016 to no avail.

Cruel Intentions season 1 is streaming now on Prime Video. For more, check out our guide to the best new TV shows to add to your watchlist in 2025 and our round-up of the best shows on Prime Video.

<![CDATA[ Matthew McConaughey still thinks his own season of True Detective is the best one: "It was one of the great events in TV" ]]> Just over ten years on from its debut, Matthew McConaughey has shared his thoughts on True Detective, and why he thinks his season is still the best. The actor was recently asked if he watched the latest season of the show – True Detective: North Country – which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

"I watched, I saw it. Yeah, there’s a lot about it that I appreciated," McConaughey told Variety about the 2014 show. "My favorite season – and I feel like I can say this objectively – is Season 1."

The actor added: "I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series. I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV."

The original series starred McConaughey as Detective Rustin "Rust" Cohle alongside Woody Harrelson as Detective Martin "Marty" Hart. The series was told across two time periods: when the pair are young detectives brought in to investigate the death of Dora Lange in 1995 and then 17 years later when links to a series of other missing-person cases bring it into the spotlight.

It was widely acclaimed when it first aired and still holds an impressive 92% critics and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the highest of all seasons of the show, closely followed by True Detective season 4, which also hit over the 90% mark.

<![CDATA[ Andor season 2 showrunner Tony Gilroy calls Cassian “Star Wars Jesus” ahead of the show’s return on Disney Plus ]]> Star Wars has never been coy about religious or political allegories, what with Light and Dark sides, and the oppressive Empire being overthrown by the Rebel Alliance. But Tony Gilroy has made a choice comparison regarding Andor season 2, calling Cassian the “Jesus” of the franchise, in a manner of speaking.

He made the comments to Collider during a discussion on the burgeoning arrival of Andor season 2, comfortably one of the most anticipated releases on Disney Plus this year. When asked about the emotional stakes for the characters coming into these new episodes, Gilroy believes it goes beyond who lives and dies.

“It's not just whether you live or die. It's the damage. It's the sacrifice you've made or the sacrifice you haven't made,” he states. “The five women, what they go through… Cassian is sort of Star Wars Jesus running through there, this messianic character running through the middle. We know that story, and it has its own complexities. But, really, I think the surprising and shocking, emotional punch will come from the collateral damage and triumph of the people all around him.”

He adds that if we’re not crying, he’ll be “very unhappy.” Honestly, knowing where this is all going, there’s very little worry we won’t all be in floods of tears.

His statement is bold, but not without merit. Cassian becomes an inspiring symbol for those around him, someone who can rally others and keep spirits high. Where that leads him and his compatriots bears a quite literal resemblance to Christ, as well.

Andor season 2 has been highly anticipated since the first season blew many viewers away in 2022. The show stands as a Star Wars highlight, up there with The Empire Strikes Back and Vader Down as one of the finest pieces of work to emerge from a galaxy far, far away.

We’d call that pressure, but this is Cassian Andor we’re talking about, he excels in such circumstances. Andor season 2 begins on Disney Plus on April 22, 2025. Keep our guide to all the new Star Wars movies and shows in the works for what else is in the pipeline.

<![CDATA[ The Doctor Doom actor from 2005's Fantastic Four thinks Robert Downey Jr.'s take on the role in the next Avengers movies will be "pretty extraordinary": "I love watching his work" ]]> Julian McMahon, the Doctor Doom actor from the 2000s Fantastic Four movies, has revealed his excitement over Robert Downey Jr.'s take on the role in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

"It's Robert, you know what I mean? What are you going to say? His body of work speaks for itself. He's a super talented guy. I love watching his work," McMahon told Screen Rant.

McMahon pointed to his time on the Fantastic Four series as operating in a very different environment to the monolithic MCU system under Kevin Feige.

Back then, it appears the idea of what the Fox-produced series was going to be was rapidly changing – not a problem for Marvel Studios as it gets set to commence Marvel Phase 6.

"When we did the movies years ago, we were at the [precipice] of all that stuff happening. So, we were finding our way a lot, and we were trying to figure out what space the movie itself lived in," McMahon commented. "Was it a kid's movie? Was it a family movie? Was it more comedy-driven, or was it more trauma-driven? We were trying to find all that stuff as we were shooting."

McMahon added, "If you've got Robert Downey Jr, who's one of the great creatives of the last however many years we've been watching him for, mixed with the elements of how we can make movies these days? I think it's going to be pretty extraordinary."

McMahon played Doctor Doom, AKA Victor von Doom, in 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The character appeared in the 2015 movie but, since then, his on-screen presence has remained dormant in live action – until Robert Downey Jr.'s surprise reveal that he would return to the MCU not as Iron Man, but as Latveria's leader.

Downey Jr. is set to appear as Doctor Doom in next year's Avengers: Doomsday and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars alongside the currently-confirmed cast of Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four. Potentially leaked concept art suggests a new Avengers team, including Kate Bishop and Ms. Marvel, will be formed to stop an impending Doom-shaped threat.

There's even talk of Robert Downey Jr showing up in some capacity during this year's Fantastic Four – but nothing has been confirmed as of writing. Besides, he's probably busy writing some more Doom backstory.

<![CDATA[ My Hero Academia prequel series lands streaming date and brand new trailer, and it looks just as action packed as the original show ]]> New My Hero Academia prequel show My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has just got a brand new trailer and release date, giving us a sneak peek at the events taking place before one of the most popular anime series.

The trailer for the upcoming anime, which has been unveiled by Toho Co., introduces us to the show’s group of wayward superheroes ready to break the law for the good of the city. The clip also includes the show’s theme song titled ‘Kekka Orai’ performed by Japanese musician Kocchi no Kento. Check out the clip below.

The new series premieres on Monday, April 7, on Crunchyroll worldwide (excluding Asia) with new episodes premiering weekly. The good news is that international fans won't have to feel left out as the episodes will drop on the site the same day as they show in Japan.

Based on the original manga created by Kohei Horikoshi, Vigilantes takes place before we meet aspiring super hero Izuku in the original show. The series is directed by JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders’s Kenichi Suzuki, and written by My Hero Academia’s Yosuke Kuroda.

The official logline for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes reads: "Koichi Haimawari is a dull college student who aspires to be a hero but has given up on his dream. Although 80% of the world’s population has superhuman powers called Quirks, few are chosen to become heroes and protect people. Everything changes for Koichi when he and Pop☆Step are saved by the vigilante Knuckleduster and get recruited to become vigilantes themselves!"

The new series leaves anime fans spoilt for choice as the original My Hero Academia is still ongoing too, with its eighth and final season releasing later this year. My Hero Academia season 8 is expected to adapt the remainder of the Final War arc and the Epilogue arc from Horikoshi’s works. However, we are still waiting on an official synopsis for the season.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn reveals Jason Momoa text him about Lobo the day he was announced as DC Studios co-head ]]> James Gunn has revealed the text Jason Momoa sent him about Lobo the day it was announced Gunn and Peter Safran would be taking over as co-CEOs of DC Studios.

Momoa has been cast as Lobo in the DCU and will appear in the upcoming Supergirl movie, but rumors had long swirled about the actor taking on the anti-hero role.

"On the anniversary of Lobo, I can't help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios – the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo," Gunn posted on Twitter. "I've loved watching Jason bring him to life & can't wait to share that with all of you."

In the text exchange, Momoa sent a very simple opener: "fucking LOBO" Gunn replied: "Dude I've said you should be Lobo for years, no lie."

"Jason was literally the first text I got after DC Studios was announced," Gunn has previously shared. "And his text was, 'Lobo baby' with ten billion exclamation points. So essentially, I was like, 'I think that's a pretty good idea' so it was always part of the plan."

Momoa, of course, played Aquaman in the old DCEU, but it was revealed in late 2023 that he'd be playing Lobo in the new DCU.

Next up for DC is Superman, which arrives on July 11. It's the first movie of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and it stars David Corenswet as the titular hero.

You can keep up to date with everything else the DCU has in store with our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and shows.

<![CDATA[ James Cameron's wife cried for four hours after he showed her Avatar 3: "She kept trying to get her s**t back together" ]]> James Cameron has shared another early reaction to Avatar 3 – and it's yet more evidence Fire and Ash will be the most emotional movie in the franchise yet. Speaking in a new interview, the director says he showed his wife Suzy Amis Cameron a version of the movie from late 2024 and she could not stop crying.

"My wife watched the whole thing from end to end," Cameron told Empire magazine. "She had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along. This was December 22nd."

He added: "She bawled for four hours. She kept trying to get her shit back together so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d just tear up and start crying again. Finally, I’m like, 'Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time'."

We don't know too much about what will happen in the third Avatar movie yet, but it will pick up in the aftermath of Avatar 2, which saw Neytiri and Jake lose one of their children. As well as tackling their grief, the movie will introduce the Ash People who have been impacted by changes to Pandora.

Cameron's wife isn't the only one he's shown a version of the movie too. He recently shared that he's shown it to a few people who have all had a very similar reaction. "I've shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been it's definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far," Cameron told Stuff NZ.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025. For more, check out our guide to all the upcoming movies coming in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ A One-Punch Man controversy has erupted after it was revealed the divisive new season 3 trailer was the work of only one animator: "Morale isn't great right now" ]]> The latest trailer for One-Punch Man season 3 has seen fans flood social media with comments about its apparent lack of quality and what it could mean for the upcoming season.

Now, it's been revealed that only one animator worked on the project – but that's not lifted the spirits of an expectant fanbase.

"I was asked to make a PV, so this time I did the animation supervision… I think I worked harder than usual," animator Kazunori Ozawa said on Twitter (via machine translation).

On the teaser, one viewer wrote on Twitter, "It's obviously going to be great art but you can just tell the animation is going to be lackluster just like in season 2. Season 1 really set the standard because now nobody really cares for this anime if it doesn't have godly animation."

Others have described it as "rushed", while the general mood of the fanbase is largely one of discontent. As one neatly summarizes it, "morale isn’t great right now."

Despite that, some have pointed to the suggestion that the PV – which stands for 'promotional video' – is essentially separate from One-Punch Man season 3. Further, its footage likely won't feature in October's return.

"The saving grace is that the PV was pre animated, so the actual anime WON’T look like it. It was done by a single animator for the purpose of marketing," one fan said.

Animation studio J.C. Staff is once again back for One-Punch Man season 3 – though it appears the latest teaser trailer isn't indicative of their work. The previous trailer, released in February 2024, brought more of the hard-hitting action we would come to expect but, given we're just over six months out from release, audiences will hope to see plenty more of Saitama in motion before then.

<![CDATA[ Andor season 2 showrunner Tony Gilroy breaks silence on the weird release schedule: "It's a Disney decision" ]]> Andor season 2 is finally arriving on Disney Plus next month, but some fans are confused about the new release schedule. Instead of weekly episodes, the streaming service will drop three episodes of the Star Wars show every week starting on April 22, which means the full season will be available to stream in less than a month.

Andor's showrunner Tony Gilroy has addressed these scheduling changes, saying that it was completely out of his control.

"We heard about that as we finished. We finished the show in November. We finaled the show in November, so we really had to wait for Skeleton Crew. It's a Disney decision. There's an internal logic behind it. They have their reasons," he told Collider this week.

Gilroy joked about this new schedule putting "a burden on podcasters", who will have to deal with a lot of weekly material. "What are they going to do? It's a movie a week, you know?," he said, acknowledging that fans are going to have to stay up late at night if they want to see the episodes as soon as possible.

In the interview, the showrunner also talked about some highly anticipated elements of the new season, like the Ghorman Massacre and the first meeting between Andor and K2.

"The bar is high", he said particularly about portraying the start of the relationship between Diego Luna's character and the robot voiced by Alan Tudyck, who we first met in Star Wars: Rogue One. Many fans expected the beloved character to appear in the first season, but Gilroy decided to save it for later.

"Just by delaying it off the first season, the controversy of that. Nobody was happy about that. I don't think Disney was happy about that, I don’t think the fans were happy about that. But there was a reason for it, a really, really good reason for it. But it does mean that I definitely have to deliver on the meet-cute, so we'll see how it goes. We're happy with what we have."

Knowing that the story is heading towards the tragic events of Rogue One, Gilroy teased an emotional follow-up that "it's not just whether you live or die", but "the damage".

"It's the sacrifice you've made or the sacrifice you haven't made. The five women, what they go through...Cassian is sort of Star Wars Jesus running through there—this messianic character running through the middle. We know that story, and it has its own complexities. <![CDATA[ Daredevil: Born Again - Learn the bullet-riddled comic book history of the Punisher before he officially joins the MCU ]]> We don't know when, we don't know how, but the Punisher is coming. As seen in trailers leading up to the series premiere, we know that Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again season one.

Though the somewhat controversial character, known for his hardcore vigilante violence against criminals of all shapes and sizes, is definitely coming back, we don't actually know exactly how he'll fit into Born Again.

So far, he's only gotten brief hints at his appearance in Born Again, including a mention from Wilson Fisk alongside Daredevil and Spider-Man - Kingpin's three biggest enemies in comics - as examples of the kind of vigilantes he hopes to take off the streets of New York City as part of his campaign for mayor.

But Punisher stands apart from Daredevil and Spider-Man in one major way: his unwavering willingness to kill in the name of his mission to rid the world of crime.

So how did Frank Castle get this way? And how does he keep getting away with murder in a world full of costumed superheroes who put away villains for far less than the Punisher's notorious killing sprees?

The answers lie in the bullet-riddled comic book history of the Punisher.

Who is the Punisher?

The Punisher taking aim at Spider-Man

The original Punisher, created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, is Frank Castle, a former Marine Corps sniper who retired to a peaceful life with his wife Maria and their young children. But their idyllic life is shattered when Maria and the children are gunned down by the mob after they happened to witness a murder, leading Frank to snap completely and declare a one-man war on crime.

Introduced in 1974's Amazing Spider-Man #129, Frank Castle originally appears as an antagonist for the wall-crawler, who was at the time suspected of killing Norman Osborn, the original Green Goblin (who actually died after accidentally impaling himself on his own Goblin Glider).

Then, in the early '80s, writer Steven Grant revamped much of the Punisher's character, making him more of a vigilante in his own right away from other superheroes. Grant also introduced Microchip, Frank Castle's longtime sidekick and man-at-arms. It's in this era that Punisher codified more fully into the character we know today.

One thing that's never changed about Frank Castle is his willingness to kill his enemies, sometimes in brutally elaborate ways, leading to few villains left standing to tell the tale of their run-ins with the Punisher. Still, he has a few recurring enemies, most notably the scarfaced gangster Jigsaw and the high-tech mercenary Bushwacker, who has an arm capable of turning into a gun. He's also not shy about killing street-level gangsters and criminals.

Punisher in the Marvel Universe

That discretion is one reason that Frank Castle most often flies under the radar of other superheroes - he shoots within his range, meaning he mostly sticks to taking on villains who are extremely violent in their own right, and who are all too often ignored by other heroes. Though he's fought everyone from Bullseye and the Kingpin to even Doctor Doom, Punisher purposely tries to avoid crossing paths with other Marvel heroes.

And on the occasions he does, well, very few of them are actually willing to tolerate his violent rampages, sometimes vowing to take him down themselves after being forced to team-up against much bigger threats. That's how Punisher and Daredevil have come to be such bitter rivals, because unlike some more colorfully costumed heroes, they both walk in the same streets, soaked in the same blood.

Frank Castle has been part of a few significant team-ups over the years, including a stint on a particularly violent incarnation of the Thunderbolts that also included Elektra and the Red Hulk. Most recently, however, he actually turned heel after joining the villainous undead ninja cult known as The Hand as their leader, known as the Beast, in exchange for the cult using its magic to resurrect Maria.

In the end, Castle and the Hand lost their war with Daredevil and his competing group The Fist, leading the resurrected Maria to leave Frank Castle. While in custody in the Sanctum Sanctorum awaiting punishment, Castle uses the last of his Hand magic to escape to the fantasy-fueled alternate reality known as Weirdworld, and he hasn't been seen in the Marvel Universe since.

Following Castle's disappearance, a former SHIELD assassin named Joe Garrison became the new Punisher after reluctantly being dubbed with the name by the media while going on a mission of vengeance for his own murdered family.

Punisher in the MCU

Jon Bernthal as the Punisher

In the MCU, Frank Castle's story is very similar to his comic book history. First appearing in Daredevil season 2 played by actor Jon Bernthal, the character went on to headline his own Netflix streaming series.

Bernthal is now due to reprise his role in Daredevil: Born Again, with early trailers for the streaming series showing a confrontation between Frank Castle and Matt Murdock. What's more, we know that Bernthal will star in his own Punisher streaming special on Disney Plus, which he's stated will be a true comic book portrayal of the character.

All of that said, how will Punisher fit into the future of the MCU? Is there room for a killer vigilante in the world of the Avengers and their allies, or will Frank Castle face the same controversies he faces in the comic book Marvel Universe, where the heroes who sanction his actions are few and far between?

These are interesting questions we hope the MCU will address, as it seems Punisher is here to stay. We'll find out how he comes back as new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiere every week on Disney Plus.

<![CDATA[ The Last of Us is "better" than 28 Days Later, says movie writer Alex Garland: "This is so much more sophisticated and moving" ]]> Alex Garland says The Last of Us is better than his 2002 dystopian zombie horror 28 Days Later.

"Let me say this: The Last of Us is better than 28 Days [Later]," Garland told creator Neil Druckmann during an episode of Sony's Creator to Creator series. "The Last of Us is better than 28 Days, or at least the writing is. I'm not going to talk about directing, that would be a silly thing. So not that. I know what 28 Days is, I know what I did. I know what that process was. The thing about The Last of Us, I was like, 'Oh, this is so much more sophisticated and moving. It was moving. I'm not dissing 28 Days, I'm very proud of it. It's a nice part of my life. But seriously, The Last of US is on another level - so yeah, of course I was influenced by it."

This is high praise given that 28 Days Later is widely credited with changing the zombie genre forever, inspiring the likes of The Walking Dead (I mean, the pilot episode opens is nearly identical to the opening of 28 Days Later) and, of course, The Last of Us. Druckmann revealed in a 2020 interview with Empire that the film inspired them to focus more on the characters when creating TLOU, rather than spend copious amounts of time on the origin of the virus.

28 Days Later was penned by Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, with the duo reteaming for the upcoming sequel 28 Years Later. In the Sony interview, when Garland says he was "influenced" by TLOU, he's referring to the writing of 28 Years Later - which is a very cool full-circle genre moment. Both The Last of Us season 2 and 28 Years Later are out this year, with each telling their own harrowing, dystopian tales.

The Last of Us season 2 hits Max on April 13. 28 Days Later hits theaters on June 20. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ Andor season 2 showrunner talks the much-anticipated Star Wars moment that we haven't seen on screen before: "It's a very significant part of our show" ]]> Andor showrunner says season 2 will feature a known event in Star Wars canon that has yet to be seen on screen.

"Ghorman, interestingly, is canonical but completely undescribed. It's a total blank slate. There's also a bit of confusion about the Ghorman Massacre, and what is the Ghorman Massacre? There's a lot of confusion within canon," Gilroy told Collider. "So, it was an opportunity to rebuild in a really significant way. It's a very significant part of our show that can do a lot of different things for us."

The Ghorman Massacre was an incident that took place in 2 BBY, when Andor season 2 is set, and saw Galactic Empire troops murder peaceful protesters on the planet Ghorman.

The event was first mentioned in The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook, which hit shelves in 1990 as part of the discontinued Star Wars Legends series of tie-in comics and books. The massacre was instrumental in the formation of the Rebel Alliance, and resulted in the attempted capture of Mon Mothma after she accused Emperor Palpatine of perpetrating the attacks.

Continued Gilroy: "Quite honestly, it's very expensive to build, so we really want to use it as much as possible so it carries over five different episodes. I'm really confident that the really deep, passionate Star Wars community will appreciate how we've straightened out that story."

<![CDATA[ Fallout season 2’s dazzling and dystopian New Vegas is coming to life in a new leaked video ]]> A new leaked video of the Fallout season 2 set gives us a pretty nice close-up of New Vegas - and we can't wait.

One Los Angeles-based fan posted a brief video of the set that sees a dazzling, lit-up pre-war Las Vegas - before the nuclear disaster destroyed civilization as we know it and turned it into New Vegas. You can watch the video below.

In the final moments of Fallout season 1, we see Hank (Kyle MacLachlan) look out over the horizon and begin to walk toward New Vegas. You might also remember that a cold fusion device, that supposedly has enough energy to restart civilization, was located - so it's possible that season 2 will see this attempt at a restart in none other than New Vegas. Season 2 does not yet have a release date, but we're taking bets on an early-mid 2026 premiere.

Fallout: New Vegas, the fourth installment in the video game franchise, centers on a location made up of parts of Arizona, California, and Nevada, that was built out of the ruins of what used to be Las Vegas. In the game, a character known as the Courier is tasked with transporting a package across the Mojave Desert...only to be robbed, shot, and buried alive in a cemetery.

After being rescued by the residents of a small nearby frontier town, the Courier sets out to find their killer and recover the package all while being caught in the middle of a conflict over who will ultimately control both New Vegas and the Mojave Wasteland.

<![CDATA[ The first three episodes of the best Star Wars show are now available to watch for free ahead of the Andor season 2 premiere ]]> The first three episodes of Andor season 1 are now available to stream for free on the Disney Plus YouTube channel.

With Andor season 2 premiering next month, it's the perfect opportunity to get up to date with the show (or rewatch if you need to refresh your memory). There are 12 episodes in total in the first season, so you can get through a quarter of the series so far without spending a penny.

A prequel to the 2016 movie Rogue One, the series is set five years earlier, during the formation of the Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire. Diego Luna reprises his role as rebel spy Cassian Andor, and he's joined by a cast that includes Stellan Skarsgård, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, and Genevieve O’Reilly.

The new season will cover a four-year period and take us all the way up to the opening of Rogue One, and series lead Luna thinks viewers will see the movie in a different way once they've gotten to the end of the show.

"I think people watching Rogue One, after watching season 2, are going to see a different film. Everything will be signified differently knowing what had to happen for K-2 to be there," he said last year, referring to Alan Tudyk’s reprogrammed Imperial droid. "It's going to make you witness the journey of Rogue One in a different way, I think. And not just with K-2, but with many other characters. I think it'll be really cool."

Andor season 2 arrives on Disney Plus on April 22 with a triple-episode premiere. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the other upcoming Star Wars movies and shows on the way in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ Brave New World box office crosses milestone for Captain America movies, even though it still might not break even ]]> After a lackluster opening, Captain America: Brave New World has managed to obtain one victory: it’s not the lowest-grossing film led by the namesake hero. The new movie has managed to overtake The First Avenger, both globally and in the US, though earnings still aren’t huge.

At time of writing, latest figures put Brave New World’s global box office at $370.8 million dollars, with $176.5 million of that coming from the United States. This means the MCU sequel has just edged out the first Captain America film from 2011, which took in $370.6 million worldwide.

This puts Brave New World third in terms of Captain America movies ranked by box office. Although it would be easy to brush this off as another franchise disappointment, broader context tells a different story about what's going in the MCU right now.

Steve Rogers is gone and Sam is the new Cap, facing different villains and having to help reshape and re-organize whatever’s coming next for the Avengers Initiative. The film comes from a position not dissimilar to The First Avenger in 2011, building audience interest and laying the foundation of a longer overall story. Director Julius Onah and star Anthony Mackie were in the unenviable position of following a beloved cornerstone of the franchise.

Phase 5 has seen the MCU on relatively shaky ground cinematically, garnering two outright bombs in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels amid the supreme successes of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Deadpool and Wolverine. Captain America 4 now sits somewhere in the middle, getting closer to a purported break even point of $425 million, but far from the billion-dollar-grossing heights of the Merc with a Mouth.

Much like in Phase 1, the emphasis is on introducing characters, growing our affection for them, and getting things moving. The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts* will both be doing plenty more of that, bringing us steadily toward Avengers: Doomsday.

You can still find Captain America: Brave New World in theaters. Our guide on all the upcoming Marvel movies and shows will tell you what else to keep an eye out for.

<![CDATA[ Michael Bay and James Cameron had a call to commiserate over the state of the movie industry: "No one can greenlight anything anymore" ]]> Director Michael Bay has shared that he and James Cameron have been discussing the state of the movie industry.

"I just had a conference call with Jim Cameron and we were both commiserating about Hollywood," Bay told The Hollywood Reporter. "No one can greenlight anything anymore. It's just so slow. It's a very different business.

"During Armageddon, those were the days," he continued, referring to his '98 disaster movie. "We had Jonathan Hensleigh, the writer. We sat down for two or three weeks. We had the NASA guy come into my office. We worked out this 20-minute pitch. We go into [former Walt Disney Chairman] Joe Roth's office. This would be my third movie. And Joe, he's like a real old time, cool studio executive. He goes, 'That's going to be my July 4th movie. I want to name it Armageddon.' We walk out and we're looking at each other. 'Did he just greenlight that movie?' That doesn't happen now. But that's how it used to happen."

Both Bay and Cameron are legendary directors in their own right, so if even they are thinking times are tough, then it's a pretty good indicator of how much the industry has changed over the past few decades.

Bay is debuting his new parkour documentary We Are Storror at SXSW Film Festival, while next up for Cameron is Avatar 3, which he recently confirmed "will actually be a little bit longer" than Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar 3, titled Fire and Ash, arrives this December 19. In the meantime, fill out your watchlist with our guide to the most exciting upcoming movies of the year.

<![CDATA[ You season 5 trailer introduces Joe's new love interest and teases familiar faces in the final installment of the Netflix thriller ]]>

Netflix has released the first full-length trailer for You season 5, and it looks like the walls might finally be closing in on Joe Goldberg.

After taking a trip to London in season 4 and starting a new life as a college professor, Joe is back where it all began in New York City for the show's final season. He's now married to Kate (Charlotte Richie), and his socialite spouse has catapulted him into the limelight – which may spell bad news for our favorite serial killer.

The trailer teases some unsavoury coverage in the press ("They've made me the most visible man in New York"), which brings him to the attention of someone claiming to be friends with Peach Salinger, Shay Mitchell's season 1 character who Joe killed in Central Park. "If anyone knows anything about Joe Goldberg, we want to know," a woman says in a public appeal. "That psycho absolutely killed my best friend Peach." There's also a shot of Nadia, Joe's former student who he framed for season 4's murders, in jail – is she plotting revenge?

For now, though, Joe is also back working in the bookstore, which is where he meets Bronte, played by The Handmaid's Tale's Madeline Brewer. She's his new love interest, and he seems to be back to his old tricks. Go figure.

There will be 10 episodes in season 5 and they're all dropping at once, unlike season 4, which was released in two parts. Alongside Brewer, new cast members for the show's final installment include True Blood's Anna Camp and She-Hulk's Griffin Matthews.

You season 5 arrives on the streamer on April 24. In the meantime, fill out your watchlist with our guide to the other biggest new TV shows still to come in 2025.

<![CDATA[ A Quiet Place 3 is finally happening, but it'll be a while because John Krasinski is so busy: "It's hard to get him" ]]> Rest assured, A Quiet Place 3 is still happening, but it might be a while before we see it. The upcoming movie is on a bit of a go-slow development wise thanks in no small to director and star John Krasinski's booming schedule.

A third mainline entry in the horror series was confirmed shortly after A Quiet Place Part 2 arrived in 2022. However, according to producer Brad Fuller, movement has only really started now, almost three years later.

"We're starting to put it together right now. You know, when we made the first one, John [Krasinski] didn't have a lot on his plate. He had just come off The Office, and he wanted to be a director," he tells The Direct. "Now, he's so in demand, and it's hard to get him. He's making a movie now, so as soon as he finishes that, hopefully, he will turn his attention to [A Quiet Place 3]."

A Quiet Place: Day One

In the time since A Quiet Place came out in 2018, Krasinski has appeared in both Marvel and DC films (the former as Reed Richards for an alternate timeline, the latter as Superman for League of Super-Pets) and been cast as Jack Ryan for the hit Amazon Prime show of the same name. His portrayal as Jack might be the hold up, since a movie is now on the way after the TV series ended after four successful seasons.

He's been in numerous other productions big and small along the way too. Krasinski's in-demand these days, and that’s tricky for any franchise where he’s been director, writer and lead actor across different installments.

Fuller clarifies that A Quiet Place: Day One, the prequel from 2024 starring Lupita Nyong'o, definitely wasn’t intended as any sort of trilogy-ender, teasing we’ll be seeing more spin-offs too. "We all want to finish that trilogy, and I'm hopeful there's even more Quiet Place movies beyond that," he adds.

Emily Blunt is expected to return for A Quiet Place 3, whenever it happens, playing Evelyn, the widow to Krasinski's character. She continues to help their children survive in a world where sound-sensitive aliens have taken over, forcing what remains of society to operate as discreetly as possible.

We'll keep our ears to the ground for more rumblings. Our list of the best horror movies on Netflix will give you plenty of scares while you wait.

<![CDATA[ The Electric State star Giancarlo Esposito explains why adapting the bleak novel into a family friendly adventure was the right decision: "I'm going to bring my children with me" ]]> Netflix’s upcoming family friendly sci-movie The Electric State could have turned out a whole lot scarier if it had directly followed its source material. But, directing duo the Russo brothers and their team decided to lighten some of the themes so the movie could be enjoyed by a wider range of ages, something that star Giancarlo Esposito says is a good thing.

"To me, I feel like this is a movie I'm going to bring my children with me to," says the star to GamesRadar+. "They still have actively developing minds about the world around them who are very concerned about what's going on today. I think it's brilliant that our youth are waking up earlier due to the advent of the cell phone and computers, and I think they're exposed to more at an earlier age."

The Electric State movie stars Millie Bobby Brown, who travels across a war-torn nation with her new robot buddy to find her brother. Along the way she enlists the help of an ex-soldier (Chris Pratt) and his android-in-crime, but as the four search for answers, they encounter the effects of the human vs robot war. The film is based on the 2018 graphic novel by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, however, readers might find that the movie does tend to skip over a lot of the novel’s scarier images, presumably to fit its PG-13 rating.

Much like the movie, the novel is set in an alternate '90s where a technological war has ravaged the US and follows a teen girl and her robot as they encounter some quite chilling sights, some of which you can see on Stålenhag’s site. Although the novel isn't all out horror, there is no doubt that the illustrations are much creepier than the flick. Just some of the book’s reviews call Stålenhag’s story, which is told through a series of paragraphs and artworks, "Hauntingly beautiful, bleak, sad and somber," and "spooky."

However, the movie does bring over the novel’s strong themes of political injustice, prejudice, and the dangers of technology when it falls into the wrong hands. "I think the more they see films like this that allow them to see all of humanity, not only depicted in those who are real, but those who are not real, is really important," adds Esposito. "And so this has to be a movie that young people, especially because one of our stars is a young person, that young people need to understand."

The cast also includes Stanley Tucci, Ke Huy Quan, Anthony Mackie, and Woody Harrelson.

The Electric State hits Netflix on March 14. Before you tune in, make sure to read our The Electric State review first. For more, check out our list of the best Netflix movies, or keep up with upcoming movies heading your way.

<![CDATA[ Wednesday star Jenna Ortega teases Lady Gaga's appearance in season 2 of the Netflix show: "It was just a really, really special environment" ]]> Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has teased Lady Gaga's mysterious appearance in season 2 of the hit Netflix show.

"It's the best," Ortega told IndieWire. "She's the best, definitely one of the most talented individuals I've ever worked with. It was just a really, really special environment to be there with her and Tim [Burton], two people that I respect and have been inspired by so much."

While we don't know what role Gaga is playing in season 2, she's already part of the Wednesday lore – Ortega's famous dance in season 1 went viral matched to Gaga's "Bloody Mary" song (though the song itself didn't appear in the show).

But, according to Ortega, her and Gaga didn't actually talk about the trend. "No, actually we didn’t. I don’t think we did," Ortega said. "We should have. Actually, I can't remember. Maybe I just saw an interview clip of her talking about it, because I feel like I'm fabricating this story in my head, but I think honestly on that day, we all were just so lucky that she came to do the show that we kept it as normal as we could."

So far, Netflix has shared a few sneak peeks about the new season – including a short clip of Wednesday visiting Tyler Galpin at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. But, it's still mostly shrouded in mystery.

Wednesday season 2 is arriving this year, though it doesn't have a firm release date just yet.

<![CDATA[ James Bond will reportedly remain male and British under new Amazon management, as Pierce Brosnan says it's "a given" that the next actor must not be American ]]> James Bond will reportedly continue to be male and British after Amazon MGM Studios took over creative control of the franchise last month.

According to a new report by the Daily Mail, an internal memo circulated by Amazon stipulated that the gender and the nationality of the character would not change after Daniel Craig stepped down from the role post-No Time to Die. "There have been so many erroneous rumours about the future of Bond. Amazon is committed to keeping the spirit of Bond alive and that means he has to be British or from the Commonwealth – and he has to be male," a source told the publication.

Meanwhile, in a new interview with the Telegraph, former 007 Pierce Brosnan said it was a "given" that the next James Bond should be British, amidst rumors that the role could go to an American actor. Brosnan, who is Irish, played Bond between 1995 and 2002 in four movies: GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day.

"In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does come with a certain lament," he said. "I thought it was coming for some time I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael. It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect."

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli relinquished creative control of Bond in February 2025 for a sum of "close to a billion dollars." Amazon now houses the intellectual property rights to the franchise, while Wilson and Broccoli remain co-owners.

While we wait for more news on the future of Bond, check out our guide to this year's best upcoming movies.

<![CDATA[ The Electric State may be the Russo brothers' most challenging VFX project yet, but stars Stanley Tucci and Giancarlo Esposito say it's one of the easiest films they’ve ever done ]]> You only have to look at the trailer to know that Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi movie The Electric State features some pretty impressive VFX work, which was a strenuous task for directing duo the Russo brothers. There is no doubt that this type of filmmaking can be difficult for actors to work around too, but stars Stanley Tucci and Giancarlo Esposito found the project to be a breeze to film.

"No, see, for us, it's the opposite," says Tucci to GamesRadar+. “It was easier than ever, because we were really able to focus on the performances. And Joe and Anthony are such wonderful directors that they could focus on those performances and all that other stuff happens later." This is a complete 180 from Joe Russo telling SFX Magazine about the challenges saying, "it's the most tech-intensive movie we've made."

Esposito, who has been a part of many VFX heavy projects including Captain America: Brave New World and Star Wars show The Mandalorian, also felt that the CGI on this movie felt particularly easy to work with. "It was very different than working on The Mandalorian, you know, where I'm on top of a TIE fighter and the whole room is computers," says the star.

"Here you're really working with, you know, physical elements that are other actors. You're working in a world where they're working with you, and you're really seeing them, and all that other stuff gets made," adds the Breaking Bad actor. "It's really a beautiful way to do it. I felt more present than ever."

Both actors agree that the reason they felt free from the pre-edit strain was because of the Russos’ direction, which made Esposito feel completely "at ease," despite his character Colonel Bradbury being presented on a tiny screen for the majority of the movie.

When asked how it was working with the Avengers: Endgame helmers, Tucci says: "We had a great time. They're great people, they're smart, they're inclusive, they're collaborative, they're funny." The star then added, laughing, "This is like the best job I've ever had in my life."

Set in an alternate version of the '90s where all tech is controlled by mogul Ethan Skate (Tucci), The Electric State stars a teen (Millie Bobby Brown) who ventures across the US with an ex-soldier (Chris Pratt) to find her long lost brother. The cast also includes Ke Huy Quan, Anthony Mackie, and Woody Harrelson.

<![CDATA[ The Last of Us season 2 is bringing in one of the biggest game omissions from season 1 – and the showrunners say it's for a "good reason" ]]> The Last of Us season 2 has got a new trailer and it's confirmed the introduction of spores, which was a huge omission in season 1. At the one minute 19 seconds point in the latest clip, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) can be seen shining a light on an infected, before their breath releases spores.

The showrunners confirmed its introduction as part of the recent SXSW panel, with Neil Druckmann saying that there is "an escalation of numbers and types of infected" in season 2. He explained: "Season 1, we had this new thing that wasn’t in the game of these tendrils that spread, and that was one form. And then one shot you see in this trailer, there are things in the air." Meanwhile Craig Mazin confirmed that "spores are back"

Druckmann added: "The reason [we’re doing it now], I mean, we really wanted to figure it out, and again, everything has to be drama. There had to be a dramatic reason of introducing it now, and there is."

In both The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2, spores are a key part of how the infection is spread, meaning that whenever you enter a place with a high concentration of infected, you usually have to put a gas mask on. This was entirely absent from the show's first season, but now some fans are thrilled they're making a return.

Posting on Reddit, one wrote: "I love that they are finally bringing spores to S2. It was my favourite thing about the infected in the games and it also adds that cool spores filter when walking through a level with spores, it added so much to the immersion." Meanwhile, a second added: "Thank God. There’s so many good scenes that rely on the spores."

The Last of Us season 2 begins on April 13 on Max and April 14 on Sky and Now. For more, check out all the new TV shows on the way in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ Vincent D'Onofrio responds to a fan who thinks Daredevil: Born Again has "ruined" Kingpin: "Thanks for the support dumbass" ]]> Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio has spoken out against a fan who thinks the new Marvel Phase 5 show "ruined" his character Kingpin.

"Thanks for your support dumbass," D'Onofrio wrote on Twitter, in response to the fan in question. Though, as the actor pointed out, this wasn't quite the insult it appears to be: "We do understand that the "dumbass" was his accounts X name."

Kingpin has returned in Born Again, though now he's gone legit as the mayor of New York City. It's quite the surprising turn for the MCU villain, and one that Daredevil himself is deeply suspicious of – as proved by that tense conversation between Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk.

One thing from the show's double premiere that no one can stop talking about, though, is the tragic death of Foggy Nelson. "You have to have a reason for remaking the show," said Cox of the shock moment. "You've got to be brave and bold. The writers had this great idea about Matt really swearing off the suit entirely, which is the reverse of [Daredevil season 3]. But in order to do that, there's got to be a real reason. It can't just be anything."

It's clear that something is going to force Matt back into the suit, though – but whether that has something to do with Mayor Fisk or not remains to be seen.

Daredevil continues weekly on Disney Plus, and you can keep up to date with our guide to the Daredevil: Born Again release schedule. You can also see our spoiler-free verdict on the whole show with our Daredevil: Born Again season 1 review.

<![CDATA[ After 18 years, the English dub of long-running anime One Piece has finally caught up with the original Japanese version ]]> 18 years after it debuted, the English dub of hit anime One Piece is finally set to catch up with the Japanese version.

The latest batch of episodes (1109-1122) from the Egghead Part-1 arc will bring it up to speed with the original version. One Piece debuted all the way back in 1999, with the English-language dub of Monkey D. Luffy and co.'s adventures following in 2007. By that point, the series was already more than 300 episodes in, so catching up is quite a feat.

Emily Fajardo, the voice director for the English dub, shared a statement on Twitter to mark the occasion. "It has been one of the biggest honors of my life to spend the last three years sailing towards this milestone with everyone, first as one of two ADR directors, and as the sole series ADR director for the last year and a half," she wrote. "For three years straight, I've had the privilege of working with this cast and crew five days a week, and witnessing their unbelievable talent and passion firsthand.

"What this team, past and present, have accomplished together, especially those who have been on board since the very beginning, is nothing short of staggering. It took a 'Grand Fleet' of nearly 1500 actors and crew members, stretching across nearly two decades, to reach this massive milestone – the largest English dubbing effort in anime history."

Elsewhere, One Piece season 2 is also in the works at Netflix, with filming wrapping on the next installment of the live-action series at the end of last year. The new season doesn't have a release date on the streamer yet.

The new batch of episodes from Egghead Part-1 will start streaming on Crunchyroll on March 18. For more, check out our guide to the other best new anime still to come in 2025.

<![CDATA[ Stars Stanley Tucci and Giancarlo Esposito say their new dystopian sci-fi movie The Electric State is more like our own reality than we might realize ]]> The Russo brothers’ upcoming Netflix movie The Electric State may be set in an alternate ‘90s dystopian reality, but stars Stanley Tucci and Giancarlo Esposito say that the movie’s themes of division and prejudice are very current to the state of our own world right now.

"I mean, those are two issues that have always been around, but more prominently today, which is unfortunate," says Tucci to GamesRadar+. "But I think that this movie, in a very new way, touches upon them and explores them brilliantly."

The Electric State follows one teen’s journey across the US to find her brother, but it's what’s going on in the background that links so heavily to our own reality. The movie takes place after a human vs robot war ends, with machines being denied their rights and sent to live behind a wall by tech mogul Ethan Skate (Tucci) and his company Sentre. This kind of divide and the effects of war are something we sadly recognize from our own world.

However, the two agree that this was part of the reason they both signed onto the project, with Esposito adding, "There was so much in this that really attracted me to it. I love that you get a vision of the world all in one film that's so masterfully executed."

But its not just the state of the world that is reflected in The Electric State, but people too. Esposito, who plays ex-soldier turned bounty hunter Colonel Bradbury, explains: "I could see the world depicted in this film through characters, both alive and non-alive, and personalities really pulled out of each one. I mean, the robot world is so interesting because their personalities are very distinct. And it was a very wonderful to have them be reflective of human personalities."

In fact, Tucci’s character Skate, who controls all new technology in the US, is actually inspired by real life figures. "I mean, it's sort of an amalgam of a bunch of different guys in positions like that. They're all usually very charming to a certain extent," says Tucci of his character’s inspiration. "But you know that there's a kind of myopia there, and there is a desire for control, and then some of them abuse it. Others end up taking their success and what they have created and doing good things with it."

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. the movie also stars Millie Bobby Brown as wandering teen Michelle, Chris Pratt as her new travel buddy Keats, Anthony Mackie as cheeky little robot Herman, and many more.

The Electric State hits Netflix on March 14. Before you tune in, make sure to read our The Electric State review first. For more, check out our list of the best Netflix movies, or keep up with upcoming movies heading your way.

<![CDATA[ Elden Henson jokes that what happened to Foggy in Daredevil: Born Again went down because he ran over Kevin Feige's foot with his car ]]> Daredevil: Born Again star Elden Henson reportedly had a very funny response to his character's fate in the new Disney Plus show.

According to a fan who said they'd met Henson, they told him how sad viewers were about Foggy's death. "He jokingly said 'I think it’s because I ran Kevin Feige’s foot over with my car,'" the fan tweeted.

Foggy was killed off within the first 15 minutes of the season premiere. He met a tragic end at the hands of Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter, AKA Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), an old foe from the third season of Netflix's Daredevil who's out for revenge.

Henson and co-star Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page, only joined the show's cast after the series underwent a creative overhaul behind the scenes, so Foggy's death came as a bit of a shock. However, according to Marvel TV boss and Born Again executive producer Brad Winderbaum, Henson and Woll will be returning for Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Set five years after Netflix's Daredevil series, Born Again sees Matt Murdock hang up the red suit and helmet after Foggy's death as he attempts to live a normal life as a lawyer (even if Nelson and Murdock is no more. RIP). But when Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin, is elected mayor of New York City, Matt finds that his past is a little harder to leave behind than he'd hoped.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are releasing weekly on Disney Plus. Check out our Daredevil: Born Again release schedule for more information or, take a look at our Daredevil: Born Again season 1 review to get up to speed on the story so far.

<![CDATA[ Jon Bernthal teases upcoming "dark" Punisher special: "It's the version that this character deserves" ]]> Marvel star Jon Bernthal has teased his upcoming Punisher special – and it sounds like it's going to be as dark and gritty as the Netflix version.

“I care very deeply about Frank, I’m really grateful that I’m getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve. We're giving it our all and we're trying to tell a Frank Castle story that we're going to turn our back on the audience – it's not going to be easy, it's not going to be light, and I think it's the version that this character deserves and I'm just beyond honored and grateful that we get the opportunity," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor also spoke about how it compares to his Netflix solo show. "It's going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It's not going to be easy. I don't know if that's the Netflix tone then that's what it's going to be,” he said, and added: "It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that."

Bernthal is confirmed to appear in Daredevil: Born Again, and, though he hasn't shown up yet, an Easter egg in the season's double episode premiere hints at his involvement in the story.

The Punisher project, meanwhile, is set to be a Werewolf by Night-style special co-written by Bernthal himself.

"It's like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story," Marvel's head of television Brad Winderbaum said of the special. "It's so exciting."

Daredevil continues weekly on Disney Plus, and you can check out our Daredevil: Born Again release schedule to keep up to date.

<![CDATA[ The Last of Us season 2's Abby star Kaitlyn Dever admits it's been hard to not look at character backlash on the internet ]]> The Last of Us season 2 is almost upon us and introduces a key character from the second game in Abby Anderson. Those who've played it through will know she becomes a major protagonist from this point on but it's fair to say she's pretty divisive among fans.

Booksmart actor Kaitlyn Dever will be playing the role in the upcoming second season and has opened up about taking on such a divisive role. Speaking to Screen Rant, she was asked about if she's paid any attention to online discourse about Abby so far.

"Well, it's hard not to see those things on the internet. It's hard not to stop myself from looking at it every once in a while, especially going into this, for sure," Dever explained. "And I want to do this character justice and make the fans proud by bringing her to life in this kind of way."

She continued: "But my main focus was just the collaboration between Neil [Druckmann] and Craig [Mazin], and making sure I was really getting to the core of who she is and what drives her and her emotional state; her anger and her frustration and her grief and all of that. I wanted to make sure that that was what I was focusing most of my energy on."

A new trailer has been released for The Last of Us season 2, which shows Ellie and Joel living in Jackson years on from the events of the first season. However, the past is never far away as tension brews between the pair and the threat of the infected grows ever stronger.

The Last of Us season 2 begins on April 13 on Max and April 14 on Sky and Now. For more, check out our guides to new TV shows on the way in 2025.

<![CDATA[ Marvel fans are discussing which of the Netflix series characters would have survived the Blip ]]> When the MCU experienced its Blip, one area that received little coverage was the street-level heroes of Netflix, like Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). While it's true that by this point, the beloved crossover shows connecting various corners of New York were coming to an end, that didn't stop fans from speculating about what the Defenders were doing when Thanos unleashed his universe-shattering snap.

Over on Reddit, fans shared their ideas about potential dramas that might result from our favorite low-level do-gooders being present for the universe's halving. More importantly, they factored in which ones might have disappeared.

One fan theorized, "Matt and Fisk are confirmed to have survived the blip. I’m going to swing and say Frank [The Punisher] did too. Thematically, having Jessica be blipped and giving her a ton to catch up on would be good context for her character. She’s usually the one in the know, putting her in a fish outta water situation would be a fun switch up."

One fan backed this idea adding, "I always liked the idea of Jessica being flooded with requests to help find the dusted, absolutely drowning in work & sorrow, and only rarely being able help people find closure."

Another suggested how things could go if the Defenders' bulletproof hero disappeared during the snap. "Luke would be interesting as a blipped character because of where they left him and where the producers said he was headed in a potential season 3. He was going to take the role of Harlem's crime lord. With him gone, it creates a power vacuum and undoes everything he worked to achieve. He'd have to start all over."

Blip or not, hopes are high that with the return of Matt Murdock, the other heroes he fought alongside in Netflix's team-up special could also make a comeback, given that Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) is already set to make an appearance in Daredevil: Born Again. We'll just have to keep watching the Devil of Hell's Kitchen's antics to find out. For a full catch-up on everything before Born Again, head here for our full Daredevil recap.

<![CDATA[ Daredevil fans are wondering if Born Again season 2 will set up a darker comic book arc for Matt Murdock ]]> Daredevil: Born Again has barely warmed up, and fans are already anticipating what's to come for the adventures of ol' horn-head beyond season 1. The conversation sparked from showrunner and co-creator Dario Scardapane teasing to Empire magazine that "Unless you dig really deep into the books, the place that Kingpin and Daredevil wind up at the end of Season 2 is unfathomable, given where they’ve been." Naturally, fan speculation kicked off on Reddit, with fans pointing to three key story arcs involving the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.

One fan said, "His hint is interesting, I wonder if they’re going to go into Matt becoming the new Kingpin." Shocking as that may seem, during Brian Michael Bendis' run with Daredevil in 1998, the red renegade did indeed take over his neighborhood after putting an unconscious Fisk at the feet of local thugs to show just how serious he was. It was a power shift that didn't last long but would still make a startling switch if it ever came to pass in the MCU.

Given the tone that's been set following the passing of Foggy (Elden Henson), other fans are predicting things will get even darker for the blind lawyer, who is already going through enough as it is. One Redditor said, "My prediction is that season 2 will either be an identity reveal, leading into the Devil in Cell Block D adaptation, or a Shadowlands adaptation where Matt takes over Hell's Kitchen."

Both are undoubtedly compelling directions to take things that could lead Matt to go off the rails that he's fighting so hard to keep a grip on. For example, the Devil in Cell Block D story arc sees Daredevil's secret identity revealed, putting all his hard work as an attorney into question. He's then sent to prison for his time as a vigilante and, as luck would have it, thrown into jail with criminals that he put away as Daredevil. This forces him to eventually team up with Frank Castle, who is also behind bars, as well as Wilson Fisk himself.

The other option that could make for one of the MCU's bravest ventures would be Shadowlands, which sees Daredevil taking over The Hand Ninja clan and slowly being corrupted by an unseen force. Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Moon Knight, and more have to team up and give Matt a stern talking-to after he takes on Bullseye and kills him (for real this time).

For now, all we can do is sit and wait to see how Matt's return to the MCU plays out and if it will lead him down a path as dark as some devoted fans expect. Should you still be sketchy about what happened before Daredevil: Born Again, check out our full Daredevil recap here.

<![CDATA[ It might only be March, but Stephen King adaptation The Monkey is now the highest grossing horror movie of 2025 ]]> Apparently, monkey business is good business, with news that Osgood Perkins' The Monkey has hauled in an impressive $38 million domestically and $42 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Consequently, that nightmarish nuisance has not only become the most successful horror movie of the year but also the seventh most successful film of 2025 so far, beating Companion and Wolf Man, which both earned over $34 million.

The film, adapted from a Stephen King short story, stars Theo James as twin brothers who battle for control of a randomly lethal toy monkey. It received significant praise from critics and audiences alike, earning a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

As far as big earners for Perkins' projects go, The Monkey is his second most successful film to date after Longlegs, which earned a whopping $125 million worldwide. This ensures that the psychotic little wind-up toy that's a killer on the drums has a long way to go before he can catch up to Nicolas Cage as the pale white stranger with an unsettling singing voice.

With such growing successes, the world really is Osgood Perkins' oyster waiting to be further cracked open for more horrifying and unsettling stories to tell. One place we can guarantee he won't be telling them, however, is via Amazon. During a Reddit AMA, a fan asked Perkins, “Are you open to directing a Bond movie/trilogy? If so, who would you cast as your version of Bond?” following the news that the streaming service had obtained full control of the super spy. Perkins' reply was simple: “No, because fuck Jeff Bezos.” Guess that's that cleared up, then?

<![CDATA[ Justice League stars Ray Fisher and Ben Affleck are teaming up for new thriller Animals ]]> Snyderverse fans, rejoice. Two of that world’s Justice League members are teaming up in a new thriller for Netflix. Variety reports that former Cyborg and Rebel Moon star Ray Fisher is starring alongside Batfleck himself in an upcoming thriller called Animals, which Ben Affleck is also directing.

Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray have penned the project, which focuses on the kidnapping of a mayoral candidate’s child. Fisher is one of the latest names added to the film, which already boasts an impressive group of talent. Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Adriana Paz are all on board, with filming beginning in Los Angeles. It will mark the first time Fisher and Affleck could appear on screen together since Justice League was released in theaters in 2017.

Initially, Matt Damon was set on taking the role Affleck ended up with (who is also on board as producer) but had stepped away due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey which seems to have sucked up half of Hollywood for its casting. This is what led to the director stepping in front of the camera as well as behind it.

It’s nothing new for him at this point. This will mark the fourth time Affleck has starred in a film he’s also helming, with the most recent effort being alongside Damon in Air, which followed the groundbreaking deal of Nike collaborating with Michael Jordan. Before Animals gets unleashed, Damon and Affleck will also star in another crime thriller for Netflix named RIP, which was teased at the Next at Netflix event earlier this year. That movie will see the two longtime friends and collaborators as cops who discover $20 million during a raid and its fallout. If you’re liking the sound of all of these edge-of-your-seat stories that are on the way, why not check out 25 of the best Netflix thrillers you can watch right now.

<![CDATA[ Daredevil: Born Again killing off a fan-favorite character is controversial, but it might prove to be the right choice for the new Marvel show ]]> Warning: the following features spoilers for the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again...

Netflix's Daredevil was always about more than just Matt Murdock. Sure, the series explores how putting on the mask affects Matt, but importantly, it also showcases the impact that has on those around him, especially those closest to Matt – and no one was closer than Foggy Nelson.

Matt's best friend and fellow avocado at law, Foggy helped the series dive deep into the psychological impact that being Daredevil had on Matt. Not only that, but Foggy was the show's comedic heart, bringing moments of levity. He also raised the stakes as Matt's other identity increasingly took over his life and his enemies sought revenge. So, Daredevil: Born Again, I have a question for you. What in Hell’s Kitchen did you just do?

A necessary horror?

Karen, Matt, and Foggy.

The premiere of Born Again, a continuation of the Netflix series (which are now unequivocally canon to the MCU), opens with Matt, Foggy, and Karen having a few drinks at a bar, celebrating their friend Cherry retiring from the New York City Police. However, Foggy has a secret: he’s been hiding a client at his flat for their protection.

After the client is seemingly attacked, the Daredevil suit quickly comes out and Matt swings into action, only to realize that he's been misled; Benjamin Leonard Poindexter, a.k.a. Bullseye, (a name that might work in the comics but is laugh-out-loud on TV) has used the client as bait to take Matt away from Karen and Foggy. Dex then attacks the pair and kills Foggy.

The sequence has been controversial. Some have seen killing Foggy as a necessary horror to twist Matt back into action. Others are outraged that Foggy, beloved by fans, has been unceremoniously killed after years and years of waiting for his return. Whichever side you fall on, there's no denying that Foggy will be missed. But more than that, I will miss the humanity that Foggy brought out of Matt.

A moral compass

Daredevil: Born Again

Much of what made Netflix's Daredevil great was the relationship between these two characters. The first season – arguably the best batch of episodes to come out of the various Defenders shows – put the duo at its center. The season sees Daredevil trying to take down Wilson Fisk while Matt Murdock struggles to keep his secret identity hidden from Foggy.

A juncture comes when Foggy finds out. Understandably, he feels like their relationship has been built on deception. He’s angry, hurt, and disappointed that he’s been lied to all this time. By the finale, they come together once more, but the relationship has changed, and so too have Matt and Foggy as people. Come the second season, Foggy becomes further disillusioned by Matt’s actions, and by the third, the pair may have completely fallen out. They are, though, on similar paths; both must learn to understand each other and to forgive each other – to rebuild trust and to heal.

In all three seasons, Foggy is essential to Matt Murdock’s journey as a character. His human side – the one that’s not an ass-kicking vigilante hero – has always been grounded by Foggy. You could argue that Foggy stopped Matt from going full-tilt murderous vigilante, acting as a moral compass. Even in his brief appearance in Born Again, Foggy does the same: "maybe I didn’t want to give you an excuse [to put on the suit]," Foggy tells Matt when asked about why he hid his client.

A hole to fill

Daredevil: Born Again

Now Foggy’s gone, what is next for Born Again? How can the show come back from losing a character who was essential to its lead’s growth? And will the series feel empty without those moments of levity and friendship between Matt and Foggy?

Karen Page can fill that hole to some degree. She is, as showrunner Dario Scardapane told me in an interview for SFX magazine, the heart of The Defenders shows, having also played a key role in The Punisher series. Yet, her relationship with Matt is different; not only was it once romantic, but she, dare I say, has more of her own shit going on than Foggy. She’s much more independent of Matt and can therefore – as we’ve seen – disappear for episodes at a time without us questioning what she’s up to.

Three new supporting characters could potentially bring out different aspects of Matt. There’s Heather Glenn, the therapist who Matt is dating; Kirsten McDuffie, Matt’s new law partner; and Cherry, the aforementioned retired police officer, now working with Matt (played by Clark Johnson in a role that feels very in line with his work in The Wire).

None of these newcomers have the history that Matt and Foggy have, and it’s hard to imagine any character ever will be able to replicate that friendship.

None of these newcomers have the history that Matt and Foggy have, and it’s hard to imagine any character will ever be able to replicate that friendship. It was with Foggy that Matt could be quite so vulnerable. They were brothers, always wanting the best for each other, even when they had fallen out. It’s a dynamic that can’t easily be replicated.

However, I would also argue that Born Again is meant to be different from the Netflix series – and Foggy’s death forces the series to change on a fundamental level. Rather than seeing Matt and Foggy work cases together, we instead have Wilson Fisk running for mayor and soaking up screen time. Over the first two episodes, it’s become clear how central Fisk is to the story, and while Kingpin was always a major part of Daredevil, he feels more like a co-lead with Daredevil now. It makes sense that, with Wilson Fisk taking on such a huge role, Matt needs an almost unthinkable catalyst to make him put away the suit (for now).

In the end, killing off Foggy may have been the best course of action for the story Scardapane wants to tell. That doesn’t mean Foggy’s death stings any less. He humbled Matt and humored us. R.I.P. Foggy (until you somehow appear next season…).

<![CDATA[ The Last of Us showrunner says newcomer Kaitlyn Dever was "within The Last of Us DNA" before the show existed ]]> Whether fans like it or not, Kaitlyn Dever's Abby is coming to the second season of The Last of Us, bringing to life perhaps one of the most divisive characters in video games over the last decade. But while Dever's name might be a new one added to the cast list, its co-showrunner, Craig Mazin, assures that she's always been linked to this world and, at one point, even considered for the role of Ellie herself.

Following the release of the new trailer for season 2, the cast was in attendance at SXSW and teased what we could expect from this gut-wrenching but gripping world audiences have learned to love. In the case of the show's brand new cast member, Mazin revealed Dever's history with the post-apocalyptic drama before she was thrown into the mix. “Kaitlyn was within The Last of Us DNA because when she was younger and [co-showrunner Neil Druckmann] and I were contemplating making The Last of Us as a movie were considered casting her for Ellie. And when the show rolled around she was no longer convincingly 14, I think it’s fair to say. "

An attempt for a big-screen iteration of The Last of Us came to life in 2014 with Sam Raimi on board as producer. Unfortunately, the project ran into the most challenging levels of video game adaptations – development hell. Sony demanded big, bombastic set pieces, whereas the franchise's creator and now co-showrunner, Neill Druckmann, wanted a quieter indie film. At the time, Dever had gotten as far as a table read for the role of Ellie before things fell apart. Now, years later, the star who missed her shot of taking the role of Joel's 'cargo' found herself in a very different perspective altogether.

"Our method is to sit with [actors] and talk to them," explained Mazin. "Making the show is hard. It’s hard and grueling. She’s an amazing actress, and you got to want to do this, and she wanted it.”

So how is Dever handling the gig now that she's been given full access to a virus-riddled nightmare she already had a glimpse of years before? “I think I just wanted to really focus on who Abby is in her core and her emotional journey and establishing her grief and how broken she is," she revealed. "That was the main goal for me.”

You'll see if she completes her mission when The Last of Us returns for its second season on April 13. If you want to add more to your watchlist, check out our guide to all the best upcoming shows here.

<![CDATA[ The Last of Us season 2 trailer brings the heart and the horror back to Joel and Ellie ]]> A new trailer for The Last of Us season 2 is here, and it's as horrifying and emotionally harrowing as we've come to expect from both the groundbreaking video game franchise and the award-gobbling first season that adapted the first title.

The Last of Us season 2 sees the return of Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, while Kaitlyn Dever joins the cast as Abby, along with Isabela Merced as Dina and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac.

Ensuring to keep its infected cards close to its chest, the new trailer gives us a glimpse at the relationship between Joel and Ellie after the cross-country trip they took, which ended in a rescue mission and a lie that Joel could never go back on.

Now, some time later, and as revealed in the closing moments of the preview, the secret is out ("You swore," a tearful Ellie says to Joel), and the bond that had been built through danger and despair is at risk of being broken. If that's not bad enough, there's the added danger of infected and outsiders closing in to make tougher than they've ever been.

Don't expect season 2 to be the exact same as the game, though. "I love the changes that we've made," co-creator Neil Druckmann said recently. "It's a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I'm really curious what their reaction will be."

We know this won't be the last season, either – though it's unclear at the moment how many more installments could remain. "We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons," Francesca Orsi, EVP and head of drama at HBO, said earlier this year. That means another two series could potentially be on the way after season 2 wraps up.

The Last of Us season 2 arrives on HBO this April 13. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the most exciting upcoming shows to fill out your watchlist.
